Whispirit started as a family owned small fabric and apparel business created by Sandy and Lee Liggett.
Sandy and Lee operated Whispirit for more than 10 years from their ranch in New Mexico. They had begun an alpaca breeding operation called Whispering Spirit Alpacas.
Their vision for Whispirit began to take shape when they discovered a mechanized needle felting piece of equipment that would permit them to make yards of fabric. They learned how to make the fabric drapy, sheer and very light weight. Putting together things they knew, seeking out people that work and create in some similar ways or who had skills and talents they lacked. Whispirit creations began to emerge.
They both hung up their legal spurs in order to make Whispirit a reality.
And as they began to think about retiring, and moving back east, they ended the alpaca part of the operation first. Rehoming the alpacas took some time. But they processed all of the alpaca fibers into batts so Sandy could continue making her artisan fabrics and one of a kind hats, jackets and wraps from her new fiber arts studio in Maine.
